A Step in the Right Direction

The Mexican government is notoriously known for corruption. Cartels run several of the Mexican cities, especially as you get closer to the United States border. President Felipe Calderon and the Mexican government have constantly said that they want to root out corruption, and they have recently taken a significant step towards their goal.

What is this significant step? The government recently dismissed a quarter of the traffic police in Monterrey according to the BBC. The government recently pulled a large number of their traffic officers off duty to evaluate the level of corruption and competency of the force. These evaluations are what led to the mass dismissal with numerous others sent for additional training.

The traffic police are a key component of Mexican cartel business. They allow the cartels to move their drugs and weapons throughout the country by letting the traffickers through key checkpoints.

Some analysts have predicted that rooting out corruption in the Mexican government could take several decades. Hopefully this step will bring Mexico one step closer to its goal.
